More Letters of Support for Impacted Communities from Elected Officials

12/10/2025

First was a November 24, 2025 letter from Senator Michael Bennet to the FAA writes " to bring two attached letters from Colorado constituents to your attention. The City of Lafayette (Lafayette) sent one of these letters in September 2025 to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), requesting information regarding a newly established small aircraft flight route for flight schools at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (BJC), and highlighting broader concerns from surrounding communities regarding aircraft noise and safety. The second letter, from Colorado State Senator Judy Amabile, summarizes a number of additional concerns from the community."

Additionally, the Northwest Mayors & Commissioners Coalition (MCC) also sent a letter to Jefferson County and Rocky Mountain Metro Airport detailing their concerns and those of the communities they represent. That letter can be seen here.

Rep. Neguse Calls on FAA to Reverse Course on New RMMA Flight Maps Amid Community Safety Concerns

October 27, 2025 Press Release

Lafayette, CO — Congressman Joe Neguse (CO-02) wrote to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imploring them to immediately reconsider and reverse the new flight maps for the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (RMMA), implemented in June of this year.

Neguse’s letter was written in response to reports that the FAA did not consult airport leadership, municipal leadership, or the community at large before rerouting airplane traffic coming in and out of RMMA. A recent memo released by the FAA outlines the challenges facing the regional airport that have led to it becoming the leading airport for Potentially Significant Events (PSEs), which include both runway incursions and airborne safety incidents. In fact, the memo details that RMMA has had more safety incidents than the Denver International Airport, the sixth busiest in the entire world, further emphasizing the need to alter flight paths in a responsible, collaborative way.

The FAA’s memo acknowledges that RMMA’s high density of air traffic is one of the contributing factors to the ongoing issues. Given this complexity, the decision to implement new flight maps without consulting airport leadership, municipal officials, or the local community has raised legitimate concerns about the oversight in managing such changes.

Read Neguse’s full letter HERE.

Coloradans living near RMMA continue to suffer from issues of noise pollution and safety concerns associated with the airport’s operations. Over the years, Congressman Neguse has led letters, put forth legislation, and held a town hall to tackle this issue, among others. He is also a member of the Congressional Quiet Skies Caucus, which seeks to raise awareness on the issue of aircraft noise and find meaningful solutions to the problem.

VFR Flight Path Updates

9/4/2025

On June 16, 2024, Superior Air Tracker noticed a significant change in the number and intensity of flight school training flights leaving RMMA. These are detailed further in their blog post, which can be found here. Importantly, they note: "Instead of aircraft turning North after taking off and flying over commercial and open space, aircraft instead head Northwest, taking them directly over North Rock Creek and Downtown Superior. On the arrivals side, aircraft now follow 287 over Lafayette. This results in more aircraft over Superior and Lafayette instead of Louisville."

A FOIA was requested following up on this change. The result of that FOIA can be found here. There are many interesting details, but the most potentially significant is the following excerpt from a memorandum:
Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport currently leads the National Airspace System (NAS) in the number of Potentially Significant Events (PSEs), which include both runway incursions and airborne safety incidents. This document has been briefed to and approved by the WSA director.

Flight School Growth was a Plan, Not an Accident

9/1/2025

"Anslow also wants to see the Airport’s already respectable, corporate GA numbers continue to increase. The good news is that at RMMA, the opportunity for growth is huge, with 600 acres of developable land – 200 for aviation and the rest for non-aviation activities – available to build into a world-class business and aviation park. “Our vision is that companies that build on our non-aviation parcel can then utilize our aviation parcel to build their hangars for their corporate flight department,” Anslow explains. “I’m also working to expand our flight school operations, because we want to help fill the severe shortage of pilots, while bringing in a new generation of young pilots to the aviation world. That’s going to be a crisis in the near future and we want to be ahead of that curve.”"

"Fortuitously, this past year, Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport saw significant movement in its flight school expansion initiative. Most important perhaps was when the parent company of Tulsa-based Spartan College of Aeronautics & Technology purchased McAir Aviation, one of the Airport’s four flight schools. “They doubled their aircraft fleet,” Anslow notes. “They’re going from about 13 to 28 aircraft, here, in the next year, and we’re very excited to be partners with them. Also, in teaming up with all four of our flight schools and our Airport engineers at Jviation, we realigned our flight school parking and acquired 28 new spaces for them to park aircraft on. That will help their growth, significantly.”"
