Issue Overview

The increase of flight school training aircraft in vicinity of our homes is a result of the mid-air collision over Cherry Creek State Park last May and changes in the way the local Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Controllers manage air traffic for the two parallel runways at Centennial Airport. Before the incident, the Air Traffic Control Tower could keep most traffic in the touch & go pattern south of Arapahoe Road – but after the incident the controllers can not turn an aircraft on final while another aircraft is coming in to land on the parallel runway, instead they must maintain staggering traffic which means extending the pattern north of Arapahoe Road putting training school pilots and propeller planes over our communities, parks and schools at low altitudes and burning leaded fuel overhead.

The Centennial Airport Authority and many of the flight schools feel as though this decision by the FAA to change how air traffic is managed does not enhance the safety of the airspace, and has lead to a
disturbance in the residential communities to the north of the airport. The FAA has sole control over the airspace and makes all of it’s decisions based on safety and efficiency of the airspace – but the Airport feels as though there was no environmental study done to alert the residents of this decision.

Each year 700,000 gallons of LEADED GASOLINE is being burned hundreds of feet over our homes and schools where children are learning and playing. The lead that rains down is also potentially here to stay, remaining in our soil and water for years to come. Unleaded alternatives now exist, the airport and FAA say it will take years to transition to safer fuels. For decades, lead has been banned from nearly everything in our lives yet lead remains in general aviation. Centennial Airport is a TOP 4 lead polluter in the entire country! [Click Here for List)

What is at Risk?

  • Safety: Imminent crash risk, potentially over one of our homes or schools
  • Health: These propeller training planes are using leaded fuel (100LL Fuel) which poses health risks to our families, pets and the environment - Centennial Airport is ranked #4 on the top 100 lead emitting airports in the nation! Click here to see list
  • Noise: Constant exposure to high decibels of noise these planes create making it hard to enjoy our own back yards
  • Negative Community Impact: The airport is currently at 300,000 flights/year. Their goal is for 500,000 flights/year

This image represents flight school propeller training planes activity in one single day. Our homes, schools, parks and communities are directly below all of the yellow lines.

What Quiet Skies Over Arapahoe County is Doing

We attend the monthly Centennial Airport Authority and Centennial Airport Community Noise Roundtable meetings asking for change. We've connected with local councilmen and congress people; Jason Crow, Michael Bennet & John Hickenlooper. We presented concerns and data to the Cherry Creek School Board of Education at their meeting on 12/12/22.

The Concerns

  • The leaded fuel used by the flight school aircraft circling over our neighborhoods is the affecting our health, homes, children and schools
  • Noise and it’s affects on our homes, mental health, and quality of life!
  • Safety & Crash Concerns

The Asks

  • That the flight schools' touch & go business cannot fly north of Arapahoe; that they fly to the Colorado Air & Space to conduct touch and go’s; or stop all touch & go activity at Centennial Airport.
  • That the Airport must reduce the number of planes in order to follow the guidelines (touch & go business south of Arapahoe and North of Lincoln);
  • That the Airport develop a formal Noise Abatement for all residential communities north of Arapahoe Road;
  • That the airport and FAA work towards the elimination of flight schools using leaded fuel immediately.

What Can You Do?

  • Attend airport meetings
  • File noise complaints daily
  • Spread awareness - let your neighbors know what is happening!
  • Write your local congress person(s)
  • Contact the FAA
  • Join our Facebook Group
  • Get involved - We need your support! Subscribe to emails
* Be sure to check out the data from the Centennial Airport Aircraft Noise and Operations Monitoring System on the Airport Data page of this website.

Tell the EPA to Ban Leaded Fuel

While the use of leaded gasoline in most cars was banned 25 years ago, leaded aviation gasoline is still used in nearly 170,000 piston-engine aircraft across 20,000 airports. EPA estimates that emissions from these airplanes account for about 70% of lead released into the atmosphere.

Send form letter to EPA Director Michael Regan here.

File Noise Complaints

File noise and airplanes flying too low as frequently as possible. The airport must look into each complaint and report them to the FAA.

File Complaint Now

Contact the FAA

Email concerns to the FAA Northwest Mountain ombudsman person who serves as a public liaison for issues about aircraft noise questions or complaints.

Apply to serve on Airport Advisory Committee

The board of Arapahoe County Commissioners appoints residents to serve the community on advisory committees and boards, one of which is the Centennial Airport Community Noise Roundtable (CACNR) whose purpose is to work with the airport to find ways to reduce and mitigate the impact of aircraft noise on surrounding communities.
