Issue Overview
Lafayette is located right in the thoroughfare for training flights out of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport to the so-called "Northern Training Grounds". Pilots fly near or within site of Highway 287 en route to less populated areas up north. This amounts to more than a hundred flights each typical day. Below is a chart showing all flights from all Denver Metro Airports on June 3, 2021. Downtown Lafayette is shown in the small blue house icon in the center of the image.
Different flight paths from the surrounding regional airports are shown in different colors. Red and green indicate arrivals and departures from Denver International Airport. Light blue is flights to/from Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. Purple is Boulder Municipal Airport. and I think that the dark blue is either Longmont or APA.
Recently, a plane owned and operated by a flight school out of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport had a forced landing in a field in Lafayette. Luckily, they had enough time to turn back north towards an open field, as their original trajectory had it going towards Old Town and the rest of the densely populated residential areas.

This was not the first incident for this flight school in the greater local area. Just a few weeks before, another plane that is owned and operated by the same flight school had to make an emergency landing in dog park in Westminster, close to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. Luckily no one was injured; however, that could have easily not been the case.
What can you do?
Lafayette is currently has no representation at the Community Noise Roundtable that is taking place at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport save for Matt Jones, our Boulder County Commissioner. Given that, it is up to us to make the voices of our community heard. Participate in public comments during the Roundtable and Airport Advisory Board meetings. Let them know just exactly how these flight operations are affecting you. Contact your local representatives, listed above, and tell them the same. The more voices they hear, the less likely they will be to overlook us as a community that is very much impacted by the operations out of RMMA and other regional airports.
